Tyson Atwell

Industrial Arts Teacher

I am a Colorado native and proud to be in my third year teaching Woodworking and Design at Dolores Secondary. My journey has been shaped by a lifelong passion for craft and design. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Product Design from the California College of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. Before teaching, I spent many years running my own woodworking business, consulting on high-tech design projects, and creating custom furniture and architectural woodwork for clients ranging from homeowners to architects and local businesses. This experience allows me to bring both traditional woodworking skills and leading-edge digital fabrication techniques into the classroom. Our Dolores CTE program is truly special. We are equipped with everything from a portable sawmill and professional woodworking tools to advanced technologies like 3D printers, a laser engraver, and a CNC router. I am passionate about helping students experience the full spectrum of contemporary woodworking—starting with raw logs and hand tools and building toward computer-aided design and digital manufacturing. Looking ahead, I am excited to continue expanding our Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings, giving students the opportunity to develop skills that bridge timeless craftsmanship with the innovative tools shaping the future of design and fabrication. Outside the classroom, I’m an avid skier, mountain biker, and kayaker, and I love sharing my passion for the outdoors with my family and our community.
